If you are a website owner – possibility is that you will need encrypted traffic on it. If you handle third party information like persons name, age or other information about him or her it is strongly recommended to use SSL certificates to encrypt your data traffic on your website. Notable is that in some countries it might even be written in the laws that a site must use SSL certification in order to maintain third party information.

What is SSL anyways? Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide communication security over the Internet. Still not clear enough? Didn’t think so networking and OSI Layers are hard to understand – I get it, I had to learn them. Basically SSL will make your sites traffic encrypted so the “bad” people wouldn’t be able to hack your users accounts or steal away other third party information from your site.

Have you ever noticed https:// in front of the domain name (e.g. https://example.com), well the “s” from https tells us that this site is using SSL which makes it secure.

If you would like to learn more about SSL/TLS or OSI layers visit Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Socket_Layer

Now when you are well informed of SSL, https and other cool and nifty abbreviations it is time to cut to the chase – where would you get those certificates, and how much do they cost?

One of the most popular site of them all would be GoDaddy.com.

GoDaddy.com pricing:

1 year on 1 domain = €9.99 NOTE: At the moment standard SSL is on sale.

1 year on multiple domains (5) = €64.99

1 year on unlimited domains = €144.99

They also offer Standard SSL protection for €64.99

Next big certification company is VeriSign which is now under Symantec’s command – Symantec has brought us such antivirus as Norton.

Their standard SSL certificates price varies so much on different options (business locations, number of servers, additional domains, SANs etc.) that I will bring out only 1 year on 1 domain price.

VeriSign/Symantec pricing:

1 year on 1 domain price (on one server; one domain and outside US or Canada) = ~ €291

Next one up is digicert – they are rather new company for me and I brought them in just because I thought that it would bring some variety to the business big names.

Digicert pricing:

1 year on 1 domain (wildcard*) = €346.75

1 year on multiple domains = €203.67

Note that these prices are “starting from” prices.

*wildcard – domain with subdomains (e.g. subdomain1.example.com ; subdomain.example.com ; example.com)

And the last but not least I’ve decided that we should get a glimpse of what Instant SSL is offering. Again it is a new name for me – but I am sure that lots and lots of companies around the globe are using their services.

Instant SSL pricing:

1 year on 1 domain = €64.95

1 year on 1 domain (wildcard) = €334.95

They even offer MS Exchange 2010 SSL certificates | 1 year = €285

You can find many other SSL certificate providers online, but I would recommend those four.
